SL learns but doesn't respond to MIDI input

Hi there!
So I've got sooperlooper up and running, it all works fine through jack. I can click record (or type r) and get a loop going.
The main issue is interface with my FCB1010: when I use the MIDI learn function and hit a pedal, the command is successfully bound (I've looked at the bindings list).
When I tap on the pedal again, nothing happens! I have tried changing the response to Note On and Note Off but no change.
Any idea what could be going wrong? The FCB1010 is set to transmit on midi ch1 and SL should be receiving on that channel.
Update: I can assign expression pedals fine. If I assign it to the volume slider it works. Why aren't the pedals working?
